Who was the most jealous?

Postby JeSouhaite » July 6th, 2010, 11:06 pm

MelissaLScully mentioned the following in another thread in the Relationships section:
"AND THEN, there are the moments when one is jealous of the other (mainly Scully getting jealous of Mulder's past girlfriends who "reappear" from time to time)"

That struck me... yeah, as far as I can remember (my memory...ha! Spotty at best), Scully's big flames/interests include Tom Colton, the Milagro guy, Sheriff Hartwell and Waterston. Even though Waterston had a big role in allthings, I don't think he created any jealousy on Mulder's side.

Do you think that Scully was more jealous of Mulder's past boyfriends/interests or do you think it was the other way around?

I tend to think that Scully was more jealous of Mulder's girlfriends primarily because of Diana's recurring character. Do you have any insight into this?

I think Scully was little more jealous than Mulder, she was really jealous of Diana. Or maybe she wasn't more jealous, she just showed it more openly than Mulder.
I think Mulder really showed his jealousy in Never again and in Milagro.

Most definitely it was Scully, it’s a personality trait and she had a very hard time hiding it from anyone. It was something Mulder knew about very early in the series, maybe as early as the episode Fire, when we meet one of Mulder’s old girlfriends in Phoebe Green. Mulder’s a very intuitive person and I’m positive he picked up on the fact that Scully gets very jealous when he’s around other women. It was always my impression that Mulder never dated because he knew Scully would get a little upset seeing him with another woman. Ever notice that the only time Mulder gets involved with another woman is the time Scully gets abducted, otherwise he never dates.

Mulder has a very charming personality and is such an interesting person, I mean the guy is a walking encyclopedia and I’m sure many women would find the guy attractive. Mulder enjoys flirting and would be a stimulating conversationalist, but does not seek out other women, plus he’s already found his soul mate in Scully, so why look any further. So to recap, it’s Scully who gets more jealous because she is more open about it and can’t hide her feeling as well.

Milagro - Agent Scully falls in love but that's obviously impossible. Agent Scully is already in love.

What i didn't like about Mulder is that he took Scully for granted very often and in a way he used the fact she would always suport him, no matter what. Like he ditched her for Diana and he knew Scully would eventually forgive him, I could just strangle the guy.

Good point GD78, I agree with you 100% here, Mulder did take Scully's loyalty to an extreme and for granted and I could have strangled the guy. There's really no excuse for this, but Mulder in my opinion was very immature in the relationship arena, that's why Diana was able to so easily manipulate him.

I think that Scully was the more jealous one,you can see it in more scenes. And Gillian Anderson is so great in acting as a jealous woman!

So true! I love to see Scully jealous! GA does such a great job at being jealous, but trying not to show it. Plus it also means that Scully is indeed interested in Mulder... so... it's definitely nice to see.

I'm pretty sure Scully was interested in Mulder very early in the series, she even dropped that date with Rob in Jersey Devil to spend a day at the Museum with Mulder. Mulder is kind of out there, but Scully just finds Mulder so much more interesting. Plus, I agree with all of you that Gillian plays an excellent jealous Scully, she is so darn convincing.

I think Mulder was also very jealous if Scully had an interest in another man, but Mulder's reaction was a little different, he used humor to hide his true feelings for her. He tried to hid his jealousy from Scully by teasing her and making a joke out of it. Like the time Pendell was waiting for both Mulder and Scully in Teliko, so he could explain his discovery to them. When Mulder saw the look on Pendell's face that Agent Scully couldn't make the meeting, Mulder teased him that Scully had a date. Well Mulder finally told him the truth that Scully had a date with a dead guy. I think both Mulder and Scully got jealous when other had an interested in someone else, they just reacted differently to it.

I agree that Scully showed jealousy more than Mulder, but really...what did Mulder have to be jealous about? Any time they ever showed Scully's old boyfriends, they were so obviously unfit to have Scully that I wouldn't have been jealous either! The times when Mulder showed jealousy were the times that there was really something to worry about, like in Never Again when Mulder was sooo hurt by Scully's actions.

Been thinking on this some more --- Scully. Scully gets the most viciously jealous. Mulder gets hurt feelings I think, but Scully wants to go for blood!

Okay maurisap, how in the world did you all of a sudden come up with this new theory? I'm just curious, because viciously is quite an interesting word to use for Scully’s personality.

I'm watching Alpha and reminded that Scully seems to be a wee bit jealous of Karin Berquist, which is odd, seeing as how there's absolutely no kind of sexual chemistry between them, even though it's clear Karin has a slight crush on Mulder. Still, she's nowhere near his league and it always strikes me as funny that Scully's even the least bit threatened by her. Just thought I'd bring it up because Alpha isn't really an episode that's named a lot when talking about Mulder/Scully jealousy, but it's definitely there.

I think Scully definitely feels possessive in Alpha, and karen is stepping on Scully's toes in this ep. I can tell Scully just wants to say, BACK OFF!

Yeah, it's so adorable, but at the same time, perplexing, cause we all know Karin is nowhere NEAR the same league as Scully. :D No offense to the lady, I actually liked her.

ITA. And as far as Alpha, I also agree that Scully wasn't so much jealous as territorial. Mulder wasn't interested in that woman and Scully knew it. Scully's issue with her wasn't that she was a threat, it was her tactics. Scully confronting her was essentially just her saying, "I got you. He may not know what you're up to, but I got you." (Mind you, in my head it sounds like "I gotchu," though I realize that's more "Brooklyn" and less "FBI.") Anywho, it's the ever present subtext that goes on between females. They're privy to a conversation that Mulder's ears just can't pick up on.

Mulder clearly wasn't interested, but Karen's ploy that involved wasting their time just to be near Mulder irritated Scully to no end.

Spot on analysis, Salome! Right down to the "I Gotchu" (I had a Sopranos flasback one time I saw that) and the girly conversation NOT being picked up by Mulder's ears... or any other part of his anatomy. And like you, I never read Scully as jealous... There was nothing to be jealous of.

I never thought Karen was "bad" or a character to hate, just really annoying, like a fan girl who finally lured her idol into her lair. She annoyed me way more than Leyla (sp?) as the latter wasn't duplicitous. Way OT... I'll stop now.

Agreed. She was completely annoying. I feel like the episode would have been more successful if she had either been somehow sympathetic or if she had really given Scully a reason to be jealous. But I suppose now I'm offtop] .

I agree with both of you, Agent Skulder and Salome. It wasn't jealousy as much as it was territorial thing.
And I didn't hate Karen either but like you said, Agent Skulder, she was really annoying. Some people can be annoying in a cute kind of way if you know what I mean but that definitely wasn't the case with Karen.

I agree with the majority of you, Scully is more jealous than Mulder. You can see it in many episodes. Mulder is more secretive, to my mind.

I think scully is more jealous, since Mulder thinks very high of her and in his mind He thinks scully would never go seriously for any attractive man, thats why He gets so upset by the implications of Never again, because He does not know what really happened that night between Ed and Dana.

I've been reading your posts about Alpha...I would love to see this go into further discussion over on the series thread. You guys have some great insights into this episode that I didn't realize. I always thought it was kind of stupid to have Scully be jeolous of Karen when obviously Mulder would never be attracted to her. Other than her mind, that is.

Mulder's jealousy as someone said above he showed it differently, for example:

Tom Colton - He got defensive and took things personal

Milargo - I believe that's obvious and came out the most

Sheriff Hartwell - Joked around about him calling her Dana when they were doing the whole he said, she said thing...and the big buck teeth

In Never Again I think he was so confused when Scully had a date and at the end I think questioned what truly what went on blamed himself for not getting her a desk believing that everything she had done in rebellion was based because he didn't make her happy?

Tithonus - he got rather jealous of being "replaced" the last line he said to the other Agent was pretty much you're lucky nothing happened or I'd kill you

En Ami - I think he got rather jealous of CSM (and of course betrayed)

And with Doggett he got really jealous, defensive and even in I believe DeadAlive was confused, and very cold to poor Scully and I think portrayed that through the rest of the episodes because he could tell that Doggett had feelings toward her in some way

To me it seemed if any guys even looked her way he reacted in some way. I don't know maybe I see or take things differently then others. I'm not sure if I explained or gave example good enough I'm quite tired =) But that's how I've seen it.

I definitely agree that the characters express their jealousy differently. I agree that Scully can be called territorial, because she is heated when her territory is encroached upon – when other women appear.
Mulder’s jealousy should be described as possessive. He isn’t as unnerved by other men specifically, as he is by any general factor that threatens to take Scully away from him. He drags her around everywhere almost like he is afraid that she will develop a personal life apart from him … and finally there is the manner in which he always touches her when leaving a room. I think if Mulder could keep Scully in his pocket – he would. Just so he could always have her, and the rest of the world could not.
