We can thank Andy Garcia for stepping out as DD replaced him. Huge discussion in progress here: http://community.idealistshaven.com/for ... tom&page=6

Duchovny's part Russian (I think) ... So his background may come in handy if he'll be affecting a Russian Accent or speaking Russian...

I'm also looking forward to this film. I'll have to check imdb.com for a release date.

Agent Skulder, DD's father was a Russian Jew, but I think his parents divorced when he was 11 years old. I've never read anywhere that he speaks Russian, but I suppose that he might.

Just maybe a release date is forthcoming... Duchovny is starting to do press (Huzzah!)...

Phantom the Movie on FB
http://m.facebook.com/pages/Phantom-mov ... 18936&_rdr

Since FB has some wonky redirects - here's the interview...

What was it about the screenplay that drew you to this project?
I think it was the intrigue of the story, the thriller aspect of it. You don’t really know what’s going on. I had to read it three or four times.

Who is trying to do what? What does the Phantom do? What is my operation? What is their operation? It was fascinating to see how Todd [writer, director] worked it out.

Some people might view your character as a villain?
He is kind of a KGB operative. His mission is pretty much to destroy half of the world. There has to be some kind of psychological process going on in there. He believes enough in his cause that that amount of death is going to save life, or save the right kind of life. This wouldn’t be the first generation to grow up under Soviet rule. They are true believers.

Did you do research before the movie?
I did whatever research I could into the Osnazs and the KGB. It was really just kind of that mindset of looking into the idea that somebody wouldn't only just kill somebody in cold blood, but be responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands. How do you get there? I don’t know if that’s research, but that’s the hurdle.

Duchovny is a Russian name. Can you tell us about your family?
They’re Russian Jews. I don’t think we come from KGB stock. Probably came from the other side of the fence. If my father was alive, I’m sure he’d get a kick out of it, the fact that part of his DNA is playing a KGB officer. My father’s father is from Kiev. My father is a first generation American immigrant. I didn’t know my grandfather when he died. I was an infant. But I’ve always been approached by Russians and Eastern Europeans who knew what the name means.

Can you describe what it was like to work with [the director] Todd?
Todd was very collaborative and very open. We had a lot of different actors in the movie. Sometimes there were scenes with four or five people and everyone had their own logic to the characters as Todd was working through them. I pretty much stayed out of Todd’s way and asked him a question if it felt pertinent.

Tell us about working on a real submarine.
Shooting inside a sub was difficult. I’m six feet tall, maybe a little taller.

When you see the movie, it’s not set decoration. It’s all these knobs, wheels, metal, pipes, and they’re sticking out everywhere. I banged into a periscope at one point. I knocked the top of my head quite a lot.

Ken Sewell, who was giving us training on the submarines, told us he actually knocked himself out once because you kind of step up through a hatch which has a lip, and he hit that lip. I didn’t mind shooting in there because it’s so real. And the confining tightness of the set helps you a lot as an actor to work in the reality of it.

Can you talk about the specific technical language of the script?
It’s almost like Jabberwocky. You’re learning another language and it has to just roll off the tongue. I mean these guys, they have to know what they’re talking about. They’re not searching for words. I had a few of those runs and it just has to come.

What message do you hope audiences will take from it
What’s interesting about the movie, being made by Americans, is that everyone is Russian. There’s not one foreign person. Everyone on the sub they meet and see/hear is Russian.

I think it’s pertinent still where you have the Russian POV of the Americans... which is they’re going to kill us all, they hate us, they’re going to destroy us, and the Russians were indoctrinated into this philosophy. It’s an interesting historical point where one culture has to demonize another to kill them. You have to kill hundreds of thousands of them. How else are you going to do it? Unless you think they’re less than human, like killing animals.

No release date yet... It appears "Phantom" is headed to Cannes for a screening and international buyer. Per Variety, "RCR Media came on board to co-finance and produce "Phantom" in August [2011] and has secured domestic distribution with Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisition Group."
http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118043503

"After the 2011 Cannes Film Festival saw an abundance of movie deals based on sizzle reels and teaser trailers, agencies are returning to the festival looking to make even more deals with partial and completed films. Here’s an exclusive look at Phantom, a drama that stars Ed Harris, David Duchovny and William Fichtner..."

Thanks for posting the interview and the trailer, Agent Skulder. Hmmm. When I read the interview, I thought that it's nice to see DD playing a role very different from his former roles. However, having seen the trailer, I'm not so certain that this role is very different from Mulder when he's being aggressive. However, I still want to see the film, so I'll reserve my final opinion until then.

No "hmmmm" about it... we're not seeing Mulder reincarnated here. He plays a bad guy. Let's hope he keeps Mulders' playful ironic tone out of his taunts...

Especially in tandem with Ed Harris (always a solid performance) and Willam Fichtner (underrated & underutilized) this film looks exciting, if not claustrophobia inducing.

Well, we'll have to see. I hope that the film features David Duchovny playing a 'bad guy' and not Mulder playing a 'bad guy.' Maybe this film will allow DD to show that he can indeed play someone other than himself or Mulder, as he has been accused of only being able to play these two roles. The film does look interesting, regardless, anyway.

Yep... I thought this was just me, but neither photo on either poster looks like DD. It looks like an artist's rendering, only the artist was looking at a strange photo.

He's definitely in the film (second billing) which is what counts. The entire cast is solid. It would be nice to see a confirmed release date.

How Jeff Rona Used a Submarine to Make the Music for ‘Phantom’

Phantom tells the story of a submarine that goes rogue after a distinguished Captain is set on a mission, but joined by a group of technicians from the “Special Projects Institute,” headed by David Duchovny, who may have other motives in mind. The true nature of this mission, and why Captain Demi (Ed Harris) was selected to head it, is the question Phantom attempts to unravel.

When creating the score, composer Jeff Rona visited the submarine director Todd Robinson was filming on and found himself inspired by the sub itself, discovering musical elements in the metallic valves and hydraulics. This use of “found sounds” (something greatly utilized in Nathan Johnson’s score for Looper) is not only a creative way to make a distinct score, but it helps to incorporate subconscious elements into the music that  relate back to the film itself.

The sounds Rona collected while on the submarine ended up becoming the foundation of the film’s theme, and the score itself. However, technology did more than just manipulate these sounds into music; it also allowed Rona to collaborate with a fellow musician is Austria to create additional instrumentation that would round out the sound of Phantom.

Go behind the scenes with Rona to see how he created the thrilling and mysterious score for Phantom.

http://www.filmschoolrejects.com/featur ... -alori.php

Phantom dives into theaters Friday, March 1st and Rona’s score will be released on February 26th, but you can pre-order the soundtrack now [go to article for links].

Up From the Depths - David Duchovny and Ed Harris Talk Phantom

By Uncle Creepy
February 6th, 2013
http://www.dreadcentral.com/news/63486/ ... lk-phantom

[Click on link for] ... Two new interviews for the Cold War horror flick Phantom have made their way to the interwebs. Dare you walk the halls of this haunted submarine? Find out soon as RCR Distribution will release the flick in theaters on March 1, 2013.

Todd Robinson directs. David Duchovny ("The X-Files"), William Fichtner (Drive Angry 3D), Ed Harris (The Abyss, A History of Violence, Creepshow) and Lance Henriksen are all aboard to star.

SYNOPSIS
Suspicion between the superpowers is at its peak, and the Americans are staging a mass Naval exercise in the Pacific. To observe the maneuvers, submarine Captain Dmitri Zubov, an experienced sailor but a man troubled by a past he struggles to live with, sets sail on what is the final mission of Soviet submarine B756. Armed with multiple torpedoes and a single tactical nuclear ballistic missile, the sub is also fitted with a cloaking device that can render them invisible to the Americans.

When B756 fails to make a position report - the last that is heard from the sub it was 500 nautical miles NW of the Hawaiian Islands - Fleet Command classifies the vessel as missing. Fearing Western retaliation, they send their entire fleet after B756.

Meanwhile deep under the Pacific Ocean Captain Zubov and the ship’s crew of the B-756 uncover a plot that will destroy humanity. Zubov is determined to foil the plot, but as the sub is pushed to its very limits and air supplies diminish, he and the crew face almost impossible odds and an increasingly unsettling sense that they are not alone...

Posted on 02/06/2013 by Dave Dreher

Here’s something new. A haunted submarine. Has that even ever been done before? Nothing really pops into my head when I try to think of haunted sub movies. I guess it doesn’t matter cause there is one heading our way now.

/// same SYNOPSIS as Dread Central, Feb 6

“PHANTOM” Submarine thriller starring Ed Harris and David Duchovny

By: Hollywood News Team

http://www.hollywoodnews.com/2013/02/06/phantom-submarine-thriller-starring-ed-harris-and-david-duchovny/

Ed Harris plays the captain of a Cold War Soviet missile submarine who has recently been suffering from seizures that alter his perception of reality. Forced to leave his wife and daughter, he is rushed into a classified mission, where he is haunted by his past and challenged by a rogue KGB group (led by David Duchovny) bent on seizing control of the ship’s nuclear missile.

With the fate of humanity in his hands, Harris discovers he has been chosen for this mission in the belief he would fail. PHANTOM is a suspense submarine thriller about extraordinary men facing impossible choices.

David Duchovny And Ed Harris Go Deep Talking Submarine Thriller Phantom

It’s been a while since a decent submarine movie came out, possibly because changes in war tactics make submarines pretty outdated. The last good ones I can think of were The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, and maybe U-571 or Below, but all of those had their faults as well. Not to be confused with the terrible Billy Zane comic adaptation, Todd Robinson’s Phantom might make submarines relevant again, and possibly also make Ed Harris relevant again.

Phantom is a thriller set in the Cold War, and pits a delusional Soviet missile submarine captain against David Duchovny’s rogue KGB agent over the possession of a nuclear missile. Though the plot seems fairly formulaic, the subtext and character backgrounds could raise this film out of stereotypical waters.

Duchovny and Harris recently sat down to discuss the film with Phantom’s soft-spoken executive producer Ricardo Costa Reis, the RCR of production company RCR Media Group.

In discussing what brought him to the project in the first place, Duchovny explains, “I think it was the intrigue of the story, the thriller aspect of it. You don’t really know what’s going on. I had to read it three or four times…It was fascinating to see how Todd worked it out.” As far as the message of the film is concerned, he thinks “it’s pertinent still where you have the Russian POV of the Americans, which is: ‘they’re going to kill us all, they hate us, they’re going to destroy us,’ and the Russians were indoctrinated into this philosophy.”

Ed Harris talks more about his own character, whom he describes as “a decent honorable guy who is pretty soulful, loyal, and pretty bright,” but one who “got into a situation where he had a major accident and has been suffering the results of that ever since.” With such focus on the character, Harris says his “concern is not so much what the whole film is saying or what it’s about,” but that “ultimately it’s about restraint in the global political situation, in terms that all of these countries have nuclear capability and are capable of blowing each other up, and you can hope to God that it’s never used.”

Phantom, which also stars Lance Henriksen and William Fichtner, opens on March 1, 2013, and will hopefully be as politically charged as its stars are having us believe. And now to watch the first five minutes of Down Periscope before turning it off.

NOT new "today," but a better article than ALL the others. Found it doing a really odd search...  Somebody's not tagging things properly.

OLD tagline - "Something is Down There" (NOT being used)

Per Article: NEW TAGLINES
- You’ll Never See It Coming
- The Enemy is Within
- Brace for Impact  (IF used for 'Last Resort,' bad idea; need to check!)

The article title below is good enough to eat. Wait. No.
GOOD ENOUGH TO TWEET, or post to FB

The truth is down there–Ed Harris and David Duchovny
enter the abyss in “Phantom”

Feb 2, 2013
(Paragraphs / reformat for sanity & easy post insertion)

Advance marketing for the new Ed Harris and David Duchovny submarine movie Phantom used “Something is Down There” as the tagline for the film. Sounds supernatural? We think so, too. If so, it’s about time we get David Duchovny back in full supernatural X-Files mode, and back on the big screen.

And Ed Harris isn’t a stranger to the supernatural or submarines, starring in the 1989 film The Abyss, and genre favorites The Truman Show, Apollo 13, The Right Stuff and the original Coma.

But - they dropped the earlier tagline and are now using “You’ll Never See It Coming,” “Brace for Impact,” and “The Enemy is Within.” Sounds like a supernatural thriller.

So what about the “Inspired by Actual Events” part?
Not much has been released about the actual events inspiration for the film.

Scenes in two trailers released seem to mirror scenes straight from one of the best submarine thrillers ever made–The Hunt for Red October, based on the novel by Tom Clancy featuring Sean Connery as a Russian sub captain and Alec Baldwin as the original Jack Ryan. Red October was inspired by actual events–a failed mutiny aboard the Russian anti-submarine ship Storozhevoy by Valery Sablin in 1975. Might that be the source for Phantom? The current movie poster has “WWIII” down the center. Maybe it’s another Philadelphia Experiment tie-in?

Additional "Genre Cast" Includes:

Action character genre actor William Fichtner (The Dark Knight, The Perfect Storm, Armageddon, Contact, Ultraviolet, Elysium and The Lone Ranger)

- Sci-fi legend Lance Henriksen (Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Aliens, Alien³, The Right Stuff, The Terminator, Tron: Uprising, The Legend of Korra, The X-Files)

- Sean Patrick Flanery (Dead Zone, Young Indiana Jones, Dexter)

- Jason Gray-Stanford (Lt. Randy Disher from Monk [also prominent in Taken 2002]).

So there’s a lot of reasons genre fans might want to check out Phantom!

Interview with Jeff Rona
He scored the music for "Phantom"

Interesting & comprehensive, this interview discusses not only Rona's unique approach to the music, but elements of the movie as well.
