Sculdergirl - often the clips pop up on YouTube a day or so after the show airs. Hopefully a member will source & find them, and you'll see them here, first.... :)

Also - Fallon's site offers vids of shows and clips, I'm guessing the next day.... http://www.latenightwithjimmyfallon.com/

DD was amusing, as he always is. And he even made a reference to Mulder, when he described how when he was recently called for jury duty they asked the potential jurors if they had any law enforcement experience; he explained that he played an FBI agent on TV for nine years! mul2]

David Duchovny on the Right Advice at the Wrong Time
...in his own words

Aug 6, 2012 1:00 AM EDT

On Mr. Rogers and me.

I’ve made so many mistakes. But it is my feeling that you learn from failures, so I welcome them as often as I can.

My favorite mistake occurred when I was 17. I was running for the elevator at my high school when the door shut on my arm. The next thing I knew, I was waking up in the hospital. I had fainted, fallen on my face, and knocked out my two front teeth, so I spent a week in the hospital getting tests on my heart and brain. Everything appeared normal.

While I was in the hospital, the only teacher who visited me was my Latin teacher, who was named Mr. Rogers, of all names. I always thought he didn’t like me, but he came and sat by my hospital bed. He told me, “You know, you don’t have to come back to school so soon.” But I was captain of the basketball team and we were midseason. I didn’t know what he was talking about and wanted to get back as fast as I could.

Then about 10 years later when I was just starting out as an actor, I wasn’t working. One movie I remember wanting really badly and not getting was White Men Can’t Jump, which I auditioned for by playing basketball. I felt like I blew it by walking away from academia and that I should still be doing that instead of going on all these auditions and not getting them.

I couldn’t process what was happening and at one point just fell to my knees and realized that I was overworking myself. I needed to take a step back and breathe a little. Part of being an actor is letting things come about organically as opposed to forcing them.

The incident with Mr. Rogers has always remained an odd moment in my life where I went “Aha!” and just stopped trying to work myself so hard. There’s a great Latin motto, Festina lente, which means “Make haste slowly.” That was the motto he was trying to impart to me. By the time I learned that, Mr. Rogers had died from AIDS and I didn’t have a chance to say, “Hey, I finally get it.” That lesson became the kernel of my directorial debut, House of D, which is about getting advice before you can process it. You want to return once it ripens and thank the person who gave it to you, but by then it’s too late.

When I say I understand Mr. Rogers’s advice, it doesn’t always mean I heed it. One way I think I’ve incorporated those words in my work is the sense of relaxation I have. Every day I try to do breathing exercises, meditation, and yoga. These things sound awfully cliché, but they help me slow down and try to point to a truth.

If you’ve experienced moments of letting go, mistakes happen, but in this business there’s a fine line between trying hard and letting go. My favorite parts of work as an actor and a director are those unplanned mistakes that do happen, because it’s like catching lightning in a bottle. It’s the best part of what we do.

Oh, my goodness, that just might be the best article/interview that I've ever read by DD. So candid and introspective. Also, does that mean that his two front teeth are false? Doesn't matter in the least to me, but I didn't know.

I love the first item in the Career Arc in the actual article:

Career Arc
1977
Gets into an elevator mishap, receives sage advice from his Latin teacher.
Brilliant! LOL

It's been widely reported on different forums that none of the info in this article is new, that it first appeared when DD maintained a blog and in subsequent articles. So it appears this article was released in front of the very limited release of his Indie film "Goats" (Aug 10, 2012) to get the actor's name in the news cycle.

Indie films don't always involve much promotion by the cast.

DD's "Goats" opened in limited release on Aug 10, 2012 (DVD drops Sept 11); DD appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live midnight August 14 to discuss it and other tidbits. Here's the brief segment (in very brief clips).

Thanks for posting the link to the interview, Agent Skulder. I think that it's cute that DD didn't know what craigslist is. Also, he and I could have an interesting discussion about the legalisation of marijuana, and why, in my opinion, it should not be legalised.

I'll try and catch "Goats" on one of Dish Cinema's pay-per-view channels. :-)

Chris Carter and I are on great terms. And I am always pushing for more. The X-Files was such a big part of my professional life that to go back and revisit that would be nothing but fun for me. Probably at some point [we’ll have some sort of reunion]. Now it would just be a joy to go back. It’s just another business decision for [Twentieth Century] Fox, but I hope so.

I like it when DD speaks fondly of Mulder. There were times in the past when he'd make fun of the character and I didn't like that. Yes, *I know* Mulder's fictional (and DD's creation, as much as CC's) and I know DD was tired and over-worked, but it just sounded like he wasn't appreciating his work. Anyway, it's always nice to see he's still game for XF3.

Lovely interview. I love what he said about GA living with him. Maybe she really is hiding somewhere in his house! Yes, her and her three children all hiding in different places, yet he hasn't found any of them! LOL! :)

Also, I completely agree with what he said about, "Californication:"

“For me, the show is always about going back to the family and the relationship between my character and those of Natascha McElhone (Karen) and Maddy Martin (Becca). We can spin off into absurd scenarios and the craziness that we do, but what has made the show last is that it has heart at its center—this family, love story or father-daughter relationship.”

The show would be unwatchable to me without the family dynamics backdrop. Beyond all the albeit at times very funny humour, and the silly soft-porn aspect, through which I fast-forward, is Hank's family. I love the relationship that he has with his daughter, and with Karen. Also, I love the message that, when all is said and done, debauchery actually leaves one miserable.

New Zealand Herald Interview: http://t.co/y6jytlJM

Sex-symbol star of two hit TV shows came to showbusiness in a roundabout way.
By Alicia Rancilio

David Duchovny has starred in two hit TV shows, The X-Files and Californication, and yet the thought of going into showbiz never occurred to him when he was growing up.

"I never even had the wayward thought. It never even entered even the furthest reaches of my imagination ... I never thought about the actors on television or film, like what kind of life they had," he said.

Duchovny, 52, said he didn't begin acting until his late twenties.

"I wanted to write plays. I was at Yale graduate school at the time for English literature not for acting ...I liked the idea of collaboration and I thought if I'm gonna write plays I should learn something about speaking the lines that I might try to write. It might help me as a writer to actually know it from that side," he said. "So that's pretty much how it started."

His career took off with roles on Twin Peaks, Red Shoe Diaries and, of course, The X-Files, which made him a star and a sex symbol.

"I was kind of blissfully overconfident at first and I don't say that as a joke," he said. "I knew I thought I was good. Not great. Not in a conceited or cocky way, but in a way like, 'Yes, I can do this'. You need in a way to believe sometimes."

Duchovny credits The X-Files with helping him with acting: "Every day I had to go to work, and every day for 14 hours, year after year after year. I don't know if I would've made it to this point if I would've just gone from movie to movie to movie like a three-month stint here and a three-month stint there. It was very good for me and my particular sense of myself or my craft to have to go in every day and do it."

Now when he looks back at old X-Files episodes, they remind him of home movies.

"I will laugh at how bad I am or stuff like that. It used to come on and I'd say to [wife] Tea [Leoni], 'Can you just see how bad I am?' and she'd never agree but it's kind of funny embarrassing. Like home movies."

Californication is now in its fifth season on Showtime.

Duchovny plays Hank Moody, a sharp-tongued writer who consistently finds himself embroiled in outrageous and often sexual situations.

He says it's not easy to pull off the show's quick-witted dialogue.

"Sometimes the better the writing, the harder it is to play because you really want to service it," he said.

"It's hard to be that quick and articulate in life. You've got to try to make it seem discovered, you know, not rehearsed."

Much of the series is devoted to the push and pull of Hank's relationship with his ex-girlfriend Karen (Natascha McElhone) and whether they will ever get back together permanently.

The fifth season starts with him returning to Los Angeles from New York, four years after the end of the fourth series.

"Both Hank and Karen are changing in their own ways over the years and I just think they have to believe that they got it right the first time," said Duchovny.

"They have to get back there, get back to the beginning."

Nice interview. Thanks for posting it, Agent Skulder.

I am so glad that DD decided to pursue acting as a career, even at the relatively late age of his late 20's. Imagine! If DD had become a playwright, we would have had someone else playing Mulder! *shudder*

I didn't know that the 5th series of "Cali" takes place four years after the end of the 4th series. Adults don't change much in appearance over the course of four years, but how on earth would that work with Becca? It would be hard to credibly age a teenager four years! I haven't watched "Cali" on the Internet since the beginning of this year. I'm still at the beginning of the 4th series. I might start watching it again, though, to see how the creators jump four years between only two series.

NB: I notice that New Zealanders say "series" for "season" as well, although it seems that the two terms are interchangeable. Nevertheless, it's nice to see the same term that I grew up with being used by someone else. :)

Good question. As with so many of the absurd storylines, I think the writers hoped viewers would allow their imaginations to fill in any gaps which the actress' appearance could not provide. Then, too, they probably "styled" the character's clothing differently enough to make that time period which had passed more credible.

NB: I notice that New Zealanders say "series" for "season" as well, although it seems that the two terms are interchangeable...

The "series / season" terms really aren't interchangeable to viewers who were born & live in the US.

NZ, I think, falls under the same system of governance as the UK. If that's true, many of their cultural choices would follow those in the UK, including daily minutia such as a set television episodes being referred to as a series instead of the US "season."

That's true, Agent Skulder. Australia and New Zealand are both culturally more similar to the United Kingdom than the USA. Canada also recognises our Queen, and, like the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, they have a Prime Minister, not a president. I wonder whether Canadians say series or season.

Yes, in the USA, a season is one series, and when you lot say, "series," you mean the entire series of all the seasons together.

Re: Duchovny Clips, Talk Shows, Interviews...

Postby Agent Skulder » February 27th, 2013, 2:04 pm

A NEW, comprehensive interview which touches on Phantom, discusss his desire to direct & confirms he's divorced, among other items generally not mentioned in his interviews. The entire interview is posted below.

EXCLUSIVE: David Duchovny Surfaces in ‘Phantom’
http://frontrowfeatures.com/2013/02/dav ... n-phantom/

It’s been a long day of interviews [re the Phantom press junket] for David Duchovny, but the former “X-Files” and current “Californication” star sees the light at the end of the tunnel. Just two more interviews…and then it’s time for a whole new round of questions on the red carpet for the premiere of his latest movie “Phantom,” a based-on-true-events story about a decades old incident involving a Russian nuclear sub that nearly set off World War III.

The divorced actor—he previously was married to actress Tea Leoni with whom he has two children—takes it all in stride. He’s positively happy to be working. The pace of “Californication” is much more manageable than “The X-Files” was, so Duchovny has more free time to make movies and, more importantly, hang out with his kids.

The 52-year-old doesn’t know how much longer the daring Showtime series, currently in its sixth season, will run, but he is ready for anything.

Dressed casually in jeans and a white t-shirt, his hair slightly mussed, Duchovny spoke about playing a Cold War era commie who goes toe-to-toe with Ed Harris, who plays the submarine captain, as they wrestle for control of a nuclear-armed sub in the Todd Robinson (“Lonely Hearts,” “White Squall”) written and directed drama.

Q: You, Ed Harris, Lance Henriksen and William Fichtner—what a great cast.
Duchovny: You never know when you make a movie. This one, I knew we had good actors, I didn’t know if the story would play because I don’t know if I really understood it.  (He chuckles.) I understood why in terms of how to act it but I wasn’t sure if the audience knew enough as we went along to keep them interested or guessing enough or guessing too much, which is always the case in a thriller. Are you giving enough (clues) or too much? So when I saw the movie I was like yes, it’s giving me just enough information and withholding enough, and that was all working for me.

Q: Did you shoot this on a real sub?
Duchovny: Yeah. It’s not on a set. It was all on a sub. At least the sub wasn’t underwater. It’s tight, though. The (filming) equipment has changed enough in the last 10 years—the cameras have gotten small and high definition. They’re about the size of a still camera. Without that, there’s no way you could have gotten a film camera in there.

Logistically, it was possible but it still didn’t make it easy and still it’s tight. It was really a question for (director) Todd Robinson to block scenes in a way to keep everybody in frame. So you’d often have a really deep frame where you’d see somebody (in) back and then it’s like a play, they come forward. In many ways, he had to treat the space like a proscenium. We didn’t do close ups but you’d walk into a close up in the middle of the scene.

Q: Did it feel like theater to you?
Duchovny: It didn’t feel like theater but you got to do these longer takes where the camera is not in your face and you’re not resetting so much to do coverage so you could get a decent momentum going. It’s not as start-stop as it used to be.

Q: Were you familiar with this story before you were cast or was this near-catastrophe news to you?
Duchovny: Oh yeah. This story just became declassified three years ago. I didn’t know anything about it. I don’t think we ever really know how close we are to disaster. We don’t want to know. That’s the point. I’d rather just live my life and hope the sane people win. Who knows what (really) happened on that sub? I think Todd made up a really interesting story of what might have happened. Who knows what did happen? It might have just sprung a leak, but this is a good story.

Q: You guys don’t speak with a Russian accent on this, which I think audiences will appreciate.
Duchovny: Not everybody is at good at accents as other people. It’s like having a singing voice. Not everybody in this film belonged in a musical, probably, and it could very well be me. (He smiles.)

Also, we had three weeks to prepare. It’s an independent film. It comes together or it disappears. You have to shoot it when you can shoot it. If you’re talking about trying to get all these actors into the same accent in three weeks—that’s tough.

Also, you’re dealing with this convention of why do we accept that it’s believable to watch English spoken with a Russian accent as if that’s supposed to be Russian? If you want it to be true, you do it in Russian. To me, it’s no more believable to watch guys walking around with Russian accents speaking English than watching the actors act. It’s less distracting also.

It was a way of saying everybody here is of the same world. There are no Americans in the film. These are Americans making the film. Therefore the world you’re watching is all one piece. Nobody has an accent in this world to another person.

Q: Your father’s side of the family is from the Ukraine. Did your dad speak Ukraine?
Duchovny: No. My dad spoke a little Yiddish. My grandfather, I’m sure, spoke Russian and Yiddish. My grandmother spoke Polish and Yiddish. My father was born here.

Q: Have you ever gone to Russia to discover your roots?
Duchovny: I haven’t, but I was thinking that this would be the best film to do that. We’re not doing a world tour to promote it, but it’ll definitely open in Russia. It’s not going to open now but it’ll open there in a few months. If it were not wintertime, I’d love to go.

Q: How did the shooting of this film work out with your schedule for the TV show?
Duchovny: My show is very forgiving because it only takes three months to shoot. It’s not like being on a network show or a show like “The X-Files,” which would take at least 10 months of every year, leaving me no time to do anything else. “Californication” is three months and I have my family, I have other work I can do which is great.

Q: There was no overlap with your show at all on this?
Duchovny: No. We shot this right after we shot last season. We would have finished in August and I think we started shooting in September.

Q: You’re in the final season of “Californication” now, right?
Duchovny: We always think that (it’s the last season). I don’t know. You don’t know with ratings on a cable show. The show airs so far down the line that you could get canceled and you’d go, “Oh no, we forgot to finish the show.”

Q: Would you like to see it go on for more seasons?
Duchovny: I don’t know. I love the crew. I love (the show’s creator) Tom Kapinos. I’ve had six years with these people. I love the cast. It’s not a huge hardship for me to take three months out of my year. I’m living in New York. I get to come out here and I love to come out here. A lot of it just kind of works for me in terms of a lifestyle, but that’s no reason to continue to do a show, I’m just saying that I’m fine.

Q: You have a few films read to come out, including “After the Fall,” with Hope Davis?
Duchovny: Yeah.  That’s an independent film so that’ll have to go to the festival circuit to get distribution but Hope Davis is a terrific actor and so is Tim Hutton (who also stars in that film).
---> I hope to be directing a film in the fall that I wrote.

Q: I heard you are writing and directing again. (He previously wrote and directed the 2004 comedy “House of D,” and has directed episodes of “Californication” and “The X-Files.)
Duchovny: I hope so. I did it once before. No one is clambering for me to do it again but I’m coming back. (He smiles.)

Q: Is it personal or is it based on a book?
Duchovny: Everything is kind of personal, but it’s an original story, a dramedy. I’m a dramedy guy to my soul.

Five Minutes With David Duchovny
http://gothamist.com/2013/02/27/david_duchovny.php

Last night [Feb 26] we spoke on the phone with David Duchovny, during an interview that was shortened to just five minutes due to the actor's time constraints ("Jen, this five minutes is gonna be so good you're not gonna want any more," he promised at the start). Below is a transcription of that interview, where we try to cram in as much as possible about his career, which we've followed since he first appeared on our television as a cross-dressing secret agent on Twin Peaks.

This Friday [March 1] Duchovny's latest movie, Phantom, hits the big screen—the dark, submarine thriller is based on a true story, and brings the viewer back to the Cold War era.

I got pretty claustrophobic watching the movie, did you shoot inside of a real submarine?
Yeah, we shot inside of a real sub. There was no set, all sub. It was an actual Russian Cold War Era sub, it couldn’t have been any more appropriate for the story. Nothing was done to it.

Where did you film, geographically?
San Diego, where all Russian subs are.

The Cold War Era, and specifically KGB operatives, are popping up in film and television recently—currently with The Americans—I just assume there’s some inner circle in Hollywood deciding all of this: like, this year, everyone focus on the Cold War, then it’s WWII or whatever. [Laughs] Cabal. Are there any eras you’re interested in seeing get made into a movie/television show?
Not eras, I think like any person I have an affection for the time in which I grew up, so certainly... I like the ‘70s, I like seeing movies set in the ‘70s with stuff that I remember. So this is certainly in that wheelhouse for me, even though I wasn’t kind of aware of this stuff going on, or even the Cold War necessarily.

You have a Russian lineage, correct? Did you look into that while preparing and researching for the film?
I do, on my father’s side, he’s half Russian and half Polish. Most of the research I did focused on military... if there was a difference between Russian military, their behavior in any way from American military. Just trying to be as specific about that as I could.

Do you mind if I ask a few questions not related to Phantom?
Sure, ask about anything.

We’re huge Twin Peaks nerds here. Do you have any memories, anecdotes you can share from playing the cross dressing secret agent on the show?
God that’s a while ago. I remember Kyle MacLachlan was so nice. I kind of came in second year when I believe they were already kind of winding down a little bit. And Kyle was like, “Hey you should be a regular,” and I was like, “Really, a cross dressing regular?” The part was actually written for James Spader, who was friends with Mark Frost who was running the show at that time. And he couldn’t do it, so they opened it up for actors to read. So that’s how I played the role that was written for James.

Would you ever work on network TV again?
Never say never, but I don’t know, it doesn’t seem like the kind of schedule I want at this point. It’s different... for the type of family life I want to have, but also the artistic life that I want to have. Directing movies, that kind of stuff that I want to do. So maybe not, but then again, I can always be drawn into something that’s really good.

What are you working on next?
In a few weeks I go back to shooting Californication. Then after that I do hope to direct another film that I’ve written. I’m in the midst of trying to raise money for an independent film which is an ongoing and nervewracking experience.

You’re a native New Yorker, do you have any favorite places here? Any only in NY stories you can share?
Well I grew up there so I got a million “only in New York” stories, but … right now I’m a big Candle Cafe guy. My daughter’s gone vegan recently and we like Candle Cafe, on the East and West side. So maybe I’ll get a free piece of tofu out of that plug.

We thought Duchovny was visiting Leno to discuss Phantom (Feb 27 was also the premiere) & possibly Cali (since SHO sent tweets advertising DD's Leno spot). While Phantom was discussed, someone decided to publish 2 tweets from the JayLeno account, both about XF3.

Beneath the surface with David Duchovny of ‘Phantom’

http://www.suntimes.com/entertainment/m ... antom.html

Entire Interview

You don’t need to sneak your way into the ancient “X Files.”

David Duchovny is an open book when you ask him a highly personal question: Why is it that the gossip always had him feuding with his TV co-star Gillian Anderson?

“You tell me why,” Duchovny says with a laugh during a phone interview from his New York home. “We’re great friends. In fact, last year the tabloids had us living together, so maybe we turned the corner.

“Some guy passed me on the streets the other day and actually said, ‘Is it true? Are you living with Gillian?’ I said, ‘If I am, she’s extremely quiet, because I haven’t noticed her just yet.’ ”

Duchovny, returning soon in a new season of “Californication,” also stars in the film “Phantom,” now in theaters.

It’s a shake-up-the-career moment. “Phantom” is a Cold War-era thriller about a Soviet submarine captain (Ed Harris) who leads a covert mission that might lead to armageddon because the sub is armed with a nuclear missile.

“Crew member” Bruni (Duchovny) actually is an elite KGB naval special forces member who wants to gain control of the ship to strike against America and make it look like a Chinese vessel is to blame.

“You haven’t seen me do this role in the past,” he promises.

“Phantom” is such a different type of role for you. What was the appeal?
The director called me and said, “I want you to do this role.” My first thought was, “Why do you want me?” That’s a question that I ask myself when I’m thinking about doing something. If I don’t ask that question, then I’ve probably done the role before and I shouldn’t do it again. If I think, “Oh my God, why would you want me?” then I should probably do it. [... Andy Garcia was originally attached as Bruni and dropped out, which is when DD was attached. See posts from 2011.]

How did you get into the mindset of a KGB guy?
This guy has no doubt, and having no doubt is my definition of insanity. No one is that sure. But he knows his cause is right. Then the question becomes, “How do I inhabit this space?” I could only equate it with religious fervor. None of us gets to experience that absolute type of knowing, where you think you have all the answers. Aren’t most of us trying to just feel our ways through life?

On the new season of “Californication,” it’s you and Marilyn Manson. Sounds like an odd couple.
We’re starting our seventh year in mid-April. It just doesn’t seem like seven years, but then again I did nine years on “The X Files.” Oh boy, now I’m feeling old. This is a rock ’n’ roll year on “Californication.” Hank is trying to write a rock opera from one of his novels. Marilyn Manson is on the show and he’s playing Manson. In fact, he’s a great actor. He’s one of those guys you think would be interesting to meet — and he is. He’s also a good actor, but I knew that would be the case. He has created one great character. He was also very smart and sweet.

What’s the trickiest part of this stage of your career?
It’s hard to surprise people. It also comes with a lot of anxiety. By definition, you’re doing something that you haven’t done before. So I look for different things, but go, “Dammit, be careful what you wish for.”

Will there be another “X-Files” movie?
Gillian, [series creator] Chris Carter and I stay in touch. We’re always ready to go. It’s a matter of getting everyone together. I would bet on us coming back.

The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson
Feb 28, 2013

For anyone short on time (or who prefers Ferguson's interview style to his "schtick"), DD's segments run from 19:25- 30:00.

Such a huge difference from Leno! And no distracting detour on this show into "XF3 hype." When you're promoting a movie, the producer generally likes you to stay on course. Personal bits are great; films that aren't even scripted? Not so much.

True trivia fact: Duchovny was Ferguson's 1st guest.

Great camaraderie: a relaxed talk, not the sort of interview Leno still churns out. Now if David D would just go on David L: The Late Show with David Letterman...

The Movie David Duchovny Has 'Seen A Million Times'
http://www.npr.org/2013/03/02/173318400 ... lion-times

Click on the link for audio & vid links

The weekends on All Things Considered series Movies I've Seen A Million Times features filmmakers, actors, writers and directors talking about the movies that they never get tired of watching.

The movie that actor David Duchovny, whose credits include the television shows The X-Files and Californication, and the films Return to Me and Phantom — currently playing in theaters— could watch a million times is Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather.

On why he loved The Godfather from the very first time that he watched it
"I think it was just the seamlessness of the storytelling, of the camerawork, the script, the acting, the music. You know, aside from that, the story that it's telling is operatic, you know, it's like a soap opera. Big things happen — big betrayals in families, life and death, bad guys and good guys — it's all in there."

On what the movie is really about
"Historically it's kind of about the history of the mafia in a way, of a certain strain of organized crime in this country that we come to call the mafia mostly because of these movies. I mean, I know people who can basically just talk in dialogue from The Godfather all day long. But aside from that, it's really the story of family and allegiance to family that supersedes any kind of morality, you know, the highest morality being your loyalty to your family rather than to a sense of right or wrong or abstract good."

Thank you Agent Skulder.
Wow DD was the 1st guest on Craig Ferguson show! Can tell they are good friends. DD is really at ease with Craig.
Craig's style is definitely different from Letterman or Leno and his accent....cos' he is from England (Scotland or Irish, i forgot). DD's mom is Scottish too. Seems DD and Craig have the same type of humor sense.

Even DD asked fans to write to Fox for XF3? Actually I bet lots of fans did that already but i don't think Fox would listen to that. To me, it's always whether CC and his team can come up with a brillant script.
What's to gain to release another film if the script is bad?
